Glasgow 2014 Branding

Glasgow 2014 Logos

After the mass hysteria surrounding the London 2012 logo and the slew of negative feedback it received, this week saw the launch of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games logo. The logo was designed by the Marque agency, and cost £95,000. The concept behind the logo is that the rings relate to different numbers relating to the games. The circles represent the 20th games, the 17 events and the 11 days of competition. What is particularly interesting about the logo however, is the second version in Scotland’s national language, Gaelic. In the UK we do not tend to see a huge amount of bi-lingual design unlike in Europe for example, so it is refreshing to see a high profile event such as these games using the branding to highlight Scotland’s heritage.

The Brand Story has also been released on the official website for the games. This gives a nice insight into how Marque worked through the challenge of coming up with a major brand such as this one. There is also already some video content using the logo in motion design.
